When you're in the public eye, people know everything about you. Movie stars and famous athletes are in the public eye.

Use the phrase in the public eye to describe, for example, a musician who's so well known that people read magazine articles and watch TV news segments about her. The public is interested in — and has access to — people in the public eye. You could also say that these fascinating folks are "in the limelight."
